Me: “Hey hon, do we like Citizen Cope?” My wife: “I do.” Me: “What that the group of fat guys from Tennessee?” My wife: “No, you’re thinking of someone else.” Me: “But we watched them on YouTube that one time. Remember?” My wife: “No.” [clicks over to YouTube, checks Search History only to find that [...]

Dear Orbeez inventor, We’ve never met before, and for your sake I’m hoping we never do. Not because I will injure you or cause bodily harm, but because I look forward to gifting your children with equally as annoying toys as your invention. For starters, you, sir (or ma’am), are an asshole. Your product that [...]

Ok, so anyone that knows me absolutely knows I am a Van Halen fan. To me, no band better represents 1970s and 1980s hard rock and roll like Pasadena’s finest. Then came 1985 and David Lee Roth’s ejection from a band that, at the time, was reaching the apex of its fame. After the whopper of [...]

As the Director of Social Media at tax giant H&R Block, Scott Gulbransen recently returned to the tax business after previously spending 1o years at rival Intuit working on the TurboTax & Quicken brands. He brings 16 years as a marketing communications professional, and 11 tax seasons, with him to H&R Block and was responsible for the launch of many key social initiatives at Intuit before leaving in 2010. A strategic thinker and business problem solver, Gulbransen has worked for some of the world’s top brands including TurboTax, Sony Online Entertainment, and Applebee’s.
In 2010, Gulbransen became the first Director of Social Media & Digital Content for Applebee’s, creating the first-ever social media strategy for the world’s largest casual dining chain. While at Applebee’s, Gulbransen lead a small but nimble team responsible for creating a robust and far-reaching social engagement channel for Applebee’s and its franchise community.
In addition to his professional accomplishments at the corporate level, Gulbransen is also a prolific blogger recently named as one of the Top 50 Daddy Bloggers in the US by Cision. Gulbransen was ranked #21.
As a member of the TurboTax communications and social media team for 10 years, Scott helped the TurboTax team launch and sustain the brand’s social media platform. He also drove and was responsible for the launch of TurboTax’s successful content strategy, including the launch of the TurboTax Blog. Recently, he launched one of the most significant social media campaigns in the brand’s history with the @TeamTurboTax Twitter project.
Gulbransen was instrumental in reinvigorating the Quicken brand almost entirely through the use of social media and, particularly, Twitter. By engaging with customers and influencers who talk about personal finance on Twitter, he and his team helped Quicken Online grow from just 200,000 users in October 2008 to over 1.4 Million in just 10 months. This led to a more focused look at the personal finance space for Intuit and, ultimately, the acquisition of Mint.com.
A former print journalist, who, after realizing his paychecks from the newspaper industry weren’t going to get much bigger, turned to the Dark Side – public relations. After working in both college athletics and inside mid-size agencies, he joined Intuit in 2000 and Applebee’s in 2010. He is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and is the married father of five kids.
Despite his busy personal and professional life, Scott is a digital native who never strays far from social networking. It’s well documented here that I work for myself. As a result of this I get to set my own schedule, which means I’ve been going to the gym again. I used to be fairly buff, clocking in at 6’6″, 235 pounds with less than 10% body fat. This was over 13 years ago, when [...]

Today might be the annual NFL Pro Bowl game, but the real deal is next week when the New England Patriots battle the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. That’s Super Bowl 46 for those of you who can’t count in Latin. If you’re lucky enough to go like me (sorry for the brag!), [...]

There’s a phenomenon I’ve encountered since moving to Jersey about 5 years ago that boggles my mind, so I’m writing this post to see if I’m alone or if it’s just a local, cultural, thing. No, I’m not talking about spray tanning, I’m referring to the use of the car horn. In this case, locals [...]

In case you haven’t seen them, the new 1800 Tequila ads are priceless. Actor Michael Imperioli (former Detroit 1-8-7 star) stars in a series of dead pan ads poking fun at today’s “men”. Last year’s spots were mediocre at best, taking pot shots at more upscale competitor tequilas. That said, this year’s ads are hilarious. Here’s [...]

It’s being reported that a new Dad was not allowed to see his prematurely born twins at the hospital because hip hop mogul Jay-Z and his diva wife Beyonce asked that the hospital shut down wards of the building to protect their privacy.

As a young man I always found my father’s work bench to be fascinating. A collection of misfit tools, handed down from generation to generation, it provided us with everything we needed to get the job done. Bike repair? Grab a wrench. Changing oil? Pull out the oil pan and funnel. Recklessly hammering nails to [...]

When you hit 40, you tend to look at your life and make a quick assessment. If it’s truly the halfway mark of your life, it makes sense to take stock and evaluate how you’re doing. It’s my guess the term “mid-life crisis” emerged from the salient moment when men take stock in their lives [...]
