EOT Bowl picks: All the muscle, none of the ball shrinkage

EOT Bowl picks: All the muscle, none of the ball shrinkage

We’re just over halfway through Bowl season and in case you’ve been following along, I’ve been tearing it up on these bowl predictions going 12-4-1 over the first 17 games against the spread. Much like my boy @bigguyd rolling running down hill, once this train gets moving it ain’t stoppin’. That said, here are the next few days worth of games to keep your winnings rolling into the New Year.

Texas A&M (-10) vs. Northwestern
Dec. 31, Noon ET (ESPN)

Northwestern is one of those teams that can surprise you at times, but finishing .500 in the Big Ten isn’t exactly worthy of a one handed golf clap. Northwestern’s wins all came against garbage teams, and A&M has the ability to stop you on D and run you out of the building on O. That said, take the A&M Aggies and lay the 10 points.

The Utes could stand to line Rick Majerus up to stop the GT running gameHyundai Sun
Georgia Tech (-2.5) vs. Utah
Dec. 31, 2 PM ET (CBS)
This is one of the more interesting games on New Year’s Eve IMO. The Yellow Jackets are a running powerhouse that is putting up over 316 yards per game, which is second best in the nation. They can also score a bunch, ranked 20th in the nation at 34.9 per game. Utah doesn’t seem to do anything exceptionally well. The Utes season-ending loss to Colorado coupled with not having really beaten anybody makes it nearly impossible not to lay the points and take GT.

AutoZone Liberty
Cincinnati (+1.5) vs. Vanderbilt
Dec. 31, 3:30 PM ET (ABC/ESPN3)
The Libery Bowl features a middle of the pack SEC team going up against a 9-3 Big East team that likes to spread the ball around. Looking at common opponents, both beat UConn and lost to Tennessee. However, the Commodores played a significantly tougher schedule and aside from early season blowout losses to South Carolina and Bama were able to hang with some stiff competition. Given all this, I like Vandy to eek out a victory here.

Kraft Fight Hunger
Illinois (-2.5) vs. UCLA
Dec. 31, 3:30 PM ET (ESPN/ESPN3)
As much as I love college football, it pains me to even make this pick let alone have to watch this game. Seriously. Between the name of it and the teams involved, it’s a veritable cornucopia of mediocrity and inconsistency. Rick Neuheisel’s inconsistent performance at UCLA got his ass canned, while Illinois limped across the end of the season finish line, losing six straight. That said, having watched the Pac 12 Championship Game, it’s clear that UCLA can actually play a little ball. The question is: For how long? Based on that, my “gun to my head” prediction is to lay the points and hope the Illinois defense can hold serve long enough for the offense to find the end zone.

Chick-fil-A
Virginia (+3) vs. Auburn
Dec. 31, 7:30 PM ET (ESPN/ESPN3)
The Jesus Chicken Bowl pits an Auburn Tigers team that in all honesty doesn’t have a quality win on their schedule. Sure, they beat a then-ranked Mississippi State early on, but as well all know early season rankings are completely baseless. Virginia has two quality wins against Florida State and Georgia Tech and seems to be able to keep it close, even in a loss (sans the VT game, of course). This game is going to come down to a last second field goal, so why not take the Cavaliers and much like you’ll be on New Year’s morning  – hang tough?
