The NFL’s Dallas Cowboys have started the season 1-6 with their playoff hopes fading fast, including yesterday’s embarrassing loss at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars 35-17. The Jags have been one of the more enigmatic teams this year, with losses to crap teams and wins against others, but Sunday’s domination of the Cowboys has to leave the Dallas franchise questioning everything from the equipment manager up to the owner’s involvement as the GM of the team.
Today Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones asked his fans for forgiveness, saying ”I’m dumbfounded that we are 1-7″. Technically they’re 1-6, but who’s counting? Within seconds of reading that statement I couldn’t help but wonder 1. Why he’s dumbfounded, and 2. Why he’s asking for forgiveness?
Don’t get me wrong: I don’t like the Cowboys. My dislike doesn’t come from some deep-seeded hatred of the franchise, although tagging them “America’s Team” was a bit ballsy — it’s because they’re one of the most overhyped franchises of my time. From Emmitt Smith’s rushing record (Does anyone really think he’s a better back than Jim Brown and Barry Sanders? Put him on the Lions and he’s averaging 1.7 yards per carry.) to Michael Irvin’s coke-infused, 2 Live Crew party days to the blue on their uniforms not matching the blue on their helmets to Jessica Simpson and pink football jerseys, there are a lot of reasons to not like Jerry Jones’s ‘Boys.
On one hand you have to admire an owner who’s willing to step forward and say his team is a disappointment. On the other hand, Mr. Jones has to look squarely in the mirror on this one: from keeping Wade Phillips around to only having one wide receiver that can create separation and get open to a running back by committee system to a weak secondary to asking what’s apparently not a starter and only a good backup QB to win every game, one has to question why Jerry Jones thinks that his involvement with the team has anything to do with their success. In fact, aside of dishing out cash, one could say that the team succeeded in the 1990s despite him.
You don’t have to look any further than my hometown of Detroit to figure out what has taken the Ford family 60 years to realize and something Al Davis will never understand: get the hell out of the way and stop meddling with your team. Your ego from building a successful car, oil, financial or casino business doesn’t translate into being a good football general manager and your fans deserve better. I will at least give the Lions credit: while they share some similarities — like a new football stadium, blue and silver colors and Roy Williams — at least the team from the mitten state is one that’s on its way up.
