@Don - thanks, your goggles analogy is spot-on!

@The Missus - you bring up a great point. There are lots of good people out there who try to keep an eye out for the safety of kids, and it isn't limited to parents. I can relate to your anxiety over the welfare of your future kids. That feeling only grows as they get older and steadily gain more independence. Guess we just have to set the best example we can, teach them, and hope they'll make the right decisions. Letting go can be very difficult.

@buzzbishop agreed, the graphic details they include in news reports can be shocking. I made a conscious decision not to link out to any of these stories from my post. Sadly there would be no shortage of candidates out there. Thanks for the link, I'll definitely check out your site!

I feel ya. Stuff that happens to kids just isnt funny anymore, even if there is a good Kanye joke in there somewhere.

Just yesterday I got the sick feeling again. News about a dad who killed his three children (i'll spare you the details they read on the news) just made me shiver and have to turn the radio off. It was offensive, did I need to hear the details?

No. Kids change things. They really do.

We discussed it at DadCAMP last week as well
http://www.dad-camp.com/2009/10/kids-change-thi...

I don't even have kids, and I feel the same way as you. I feel a need to watch out for kids too. Part of the reason I don't want children (right now) is because I am afraid of something horrible happening to them, because I know I won't always be there to watch over them. That's why I make an effort to be conscientious of the people around me and if they are in need.
