joe_watersI have two full-time jobs that I love–most of the time. The first is Director of Cause & Event Marketing for Boston Medical Center. You can read about my work at the intersection of business, marketing and philanthropy at Selfish Giving or on Twitter @joewaters.

My other job is full-time dad to two great kids who have taught me more about being a dad than I’ve taught them about being kids (they get their smarts from their mother). Now in my 40′s, the world has changed a lot since I was a kid. Long gone is the two-family in Brockton where I shared a room with my twin and three other brothers. So too is the family wagon that mom spray-painted herself.

But their hard won replacements aren’t the comforts they promised to be, especially to my kids. They have a new baseline. My kids gripe over the lack of plush carpeting and earth tones in their bedrooms. The car doesn’t have the latest gadgetry and comforts. “You think you’ve done well?” they stare back at me with those big blue eyes.

Think again.

They say that raising kids is part joy, part guerilla warfare. Maybe my posts will show that it’s a battle you can win (or at least die from with a smile on your face).
